ROHM Silicon Carbide Schottky Diodes Push the Performance Envelope

ROHM’s SCS1xxAGC series of high-performance silicon carbide (SiC) Schottky barrier diodes (SBD) are now available. This new class of SiC diodes offers industry-leading low forward voltage and fast recovery time, leading to improved power conversion efficiency in applications such as PFC/power supplies, solar panel inverters, uninterruptible power supplies, air conditioners and others.

The SCS1xxAGC series maintains low forward voltage over a wide operating temperature range which results in lower power dissipation under actual operating conditions. For example, the 10 A rated part has a VF of 1.5 V at 25°C and 1.6 V at 150°C. Low VF reduces conduction loss while the ultra-short reverse recovery time (15 ns, typical) enables high-speed switching and minimizes switching loss.

IR LEDs for Proximity Sensing

ROHM’s SIM-030ST and SIM-040ST are high-performance IR LEDs ideally suited for proximity sensor applications. These surface-mount IR LEDs feature breakthrough IR wavelength technology providing peak output of 870 nm, compared to 950 nm for comparable devices. The 870 nm level is much closer to the peak wave sensitivity of phototransistors (sensors), thus achieving higher efficiency proximity sensing and energy savings of up to 66%. In addition, the small package footprint and low-profile further enhance their application in cell phones and other portable devices.

The SIM-030ST, the smaller of the two devices, has a 2.3 mm x 1.95 mm footprint and a height of just 0.9 mm. With a forward current (IF) of 100 mA, the device delivers typical emission strength of 30 mW/sr (milliwatts per steradian). The slightly larger SIM-040ST (3.1 mm x 2.25 mm x 1.6 mm) provides 40 mW/sr, typical emission strength.

These IR LEDs are the latest additions to ROHM’s Optical Sensors Series of emitters, receivers, photointerrupters, tilt sensors, IrDA modules and remote control modules.

Stepper Motor Drivers

ROHM high-reliability Stepper Motor Drivers (SMDs) offer exceptional performance features for printers and copiers, scanners, security cameras, robotics, sewing machines, factory automation and other precision motor control applications.

Full-step to sixteenth-step Stepper Drivers operate from a single 36V supply; ultra-thin, compact package features adjacent-pin short protection and bottom side heat sink; unique Ghost Supply Prevention feature eliminates motor malfunctions; voltage, current and thermal protection built in.

Stepper Driver features include:
• Built-in translator
• Built-in regulator
• Multiple protection circuits
• Logic input with Ghost Supply Prevention
• Constant current control tuning function
• DMOS output
• Adjacent pin short protection

LED Drivers for Automotive Applications

ROHM Semiconductor’s LED drivers offer exceptional performance solutions for passenger compartment and forward illumination applications. ROHM has expanded its range of highly integrated LED Driver ICs to provide designers a variety of design options with integrated or externally switched outputs, parallel/series control and extensive protection and fault detection functions in small surface mount packages.

The basic operating requirement for an LED driver is to supply a constant current to LEDs in order to produce consistent lighting. Unlike other market segments, automotive applications have several stringent guidelines in regards to:

  • Temperature and humidity range
  • Voltage range
  • Ability to withstand harsh chemicals
  • Electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility (EMI)
  • Protection circuitry
